北京同仁堂，是中国传统医药中闻名遐迩的老字号，始建于1669年，从1723年开始至1911年一直供奉清代皇宫御药房用药，历经八代皇帝，长达188年。

Tongrentang in Beijing is a famous time-honored store of traditional Chinese medicine which was first built in 1669 and was originally designated to provide medicine for the imperial pharmacy of the Qing Dynasty during the reigns of eight emperors in the 188-year period between 1723 and 1911.

　   创始人乐显扬精通医药，曾在太医院做官，积累了丰富的宫廷秘方、古方和验方，还通过丰富的实践，掌握了许多独到的配方和炮制方法，为开设同仁堂打下了基础。1669年，他为“同仁堂”定下了堂名，也定下了“济世养生”的理念，并创办了同仁堂药室。1702年，其子乐凤鸣在北京大栅栏开办了同仁堂药店，并在总结前人制药经验的基础上，编纂了《乐氏世代祖传丸散膏丹下料配方》。

Its founder Yue Xianyang was a medical expert who once worked in the Imperial Academy of Medicine where he accumulated many secret prescriptions, ancient prescriptions and empirical prescriptions used in the royal court, and learnt a number of ways to produce and prepare medicine so that a sound basis was laid for the establishment of Tongrentang. In 1669, he gave “Tongrentang” its name as well as its concept of “helping people and preserving health”, and started the Tongrentang pharmacy. In 1702, Yue Fengming, son of Yue Xianyang, opened the Tongrentang drugstore at the Da’shi’lar Street of Beijing and wrote the book titled The Yue Family’s Ancestral Prescriptions of Medicines of Various Types based on a summing-up of his predecessors’ experience in preparing Chinese medicine.

　   在三百多年的历史长河中，同仁堂形成了具有自身特点的中医药文化。在同仁堂门店的大门两侧，人们会看到这样两句古训：“炮制虽繁必不敢省人工，品味虽贵必不敢减物力”，这体现了同仁堂对药品质量的严格要求。在经营方面，同仁堂恪守“童叟无欺，一视同仁”的职业道德，这也是“同仁堂”这个店名所寄托的经营理念。

Over its history of more than 300 years, Tongrentang has developed a distinctive medical culture. At both sides of the gate of Tongrentang, there are two sentences forming a motto saying “no manpower shall be spared no matter how complicated the procedures of the pharmaceutical production are; no material shall be reduced no matter how much the cost is”, which shows the strict quality standards for the medicines of Tongrentang. As for the business, Tongrentang abides by the ethic of “cheating neither the old nor the young and treating everybody equally without discrimination”, which is also the business concept embodied in the name Tongrentang (literally meaning “the hall of equal benevolence” in Chinese).

　   同仁堂的产品以“配方独特、选料上乘、工艺精湛、疗效显著”而享誉海内外。同仁堂经营的中草药和丸、散、膏、丹等各种中成药，选料真实，炮制讲究，药味齐全，像安宫牛黄丸、牛黄清心丸、大活络丹、乌鸡白凤丸等一直在市场上供不应求，不仅行销国内，而且远销世界各地。如今，同仁堂已成为一家上市公司，门店遍布全国各地，在国外的唐人街上，也能看到同仁堂的门面。

The products of Tongrentang are world famous for their unique prescriptions, choice materials, exquisite processing techniques and striking effectiveness. The herbal medicines and various traditional patent medicines such as boluses, powders, ointments and pills etc. sold by Tongrentang are all made from genuine materials through a meticulous preparing process with complete ingredients of the prescription. Drugs like Angongniuhuang bolus, Niuhuangqingxin bolus, Dahuoluo pill and Wujibaifeng bolus, always falling short of demand, are sold well both in China and in many other places around the world. Today, Tongrentang is a listed company, with its branch stores found all over China as well as in some Chinatowns located outside of China.
