Sanxingdui is the site of the capital city of the ancient Shu Kingdom existing about 3,000 to 5,000 years ago.

A very intriguing cultural phenomenon about Sanxingdui is the amount of bronze masks excavated. A large number of various bronze wares had been excavated in China before, but never had a bronze mask been found. The faces of those masks are strikingly different from those of the local modern people. What do those masks stand for? Even the archeologists haven't figured out the answer. Besides the bronze masks, there's a bronze human-figure statue, whose features are just like those of the masks.

Moreover, there were a gold crutch, bronze tree and ivories unearthed. The gold crutch is 1.42 meters long engraved with mysterious decorations, two birds facing each other and two fish turning their backs at each other. There was also a head statue with a secret smile. Standing on the bronze tree branches were 9 birds. According to the research, those are not common birds, but holy birds that represent the Sun God.

According to the experts, the bronze culture civilization in Sanxingdui is very different from that of the Central Plains of China. Rather it is very close to other famous cultures, like the Maya culture or the ancient Egyptian culture.
