Lu Bisong was the former president of Beijing Language and Culture Institute (present-day Beijing Language and Culture University), the first director of China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, the first president of the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching, a famous linguist, language educator and pioneer in teaching Chinese as a foreign language. He has been engaged in teaching and researching Chinese as a foreign language for a long time and has published more than 10 theoretical works and Chinese textbooks. Since the 1980s, he has published dozens of important papers at home and abroad, and has been abroad to teach or study for many times. He played a major role in the establishment of All China Association for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language in 1983 and the International Society for Chinese Language Teaching in 1987. He assumed the major responsibilities in the accomplishment of Chinese Language Proficiency (HSK) (at the elementary and advanced levels) in 1990 and got the Honored Doctorate Degree from West Virginia University in 1997. Since the end of the 20th century, Professor Lu Bisong has been committed to advocating “sinogram-based theory”, and has put forward the concept of “Combination Chinese”, advocating reinterpreting the characteristics of Chinese on the basis of the sinogram-based theory, so as to reform the teaching theory, teaching system and specific teaching methods of Chinese as a foreign language. New Annotations of Chinese Grammar is the achievement of Professor Lu’s research in the last years of his life, which is a representative work that applies the concept of sinogram-based theory and Combination Chinese to Chinese analysis and Chinese teaching.
