| In northeastern China, there is a mountain which is capped with snow all year round. Its name is Changbai Mountain. | |
| This is Tianchi, (the Lake of Heaven) the most famous sight of Changbai Mountain. Changbai Mountain is a dormant volcano which has erupted four times in the past. Following these eruptions, the volcanic vent gradually formed into a crater lake on the mountaintop. Since the lake’s surface is 2,150 meters above sea level, it was aptly named “the Lake of Heaven”.
| The Lake of Heaven is not only the largest crater lake in China; it is also the headstream for three important rivers in China’s northeast region—the Songhua River, the Tumen River and the Yalu River. The lake’s scenery is extremely exquisite; people often say that you have not visited Changbai Mountain unless you have visited the Lake of Heaven. | |
| The water of the Lake of Heaven overflows from a small gap and forms into a stream. After running for over 1,000 meters, the stream falls from high above, like “fairies scattering flowers” or “ten thousand steeds in full gallop”, producing a spectacular sight. This is the renowned Changbai Waterfall, which measures 68 meters in height. The ear-penetrating roar of the gushing water can easily be heard from several kilometers away. | |
| Not far from the Changbai Waterfall are 13 thermal springs of varying sizes. Even during northeastern China’s frosty winters, these thermal springs are still hot and steaming.
| Changbai Mountain is also richly endowed by nature. From the foot to the summit of the mountain, a variety of plants from the temperate zone to the frigid zone can be seen. In addition, Changbai Mountain is home to many rare animals, including the Siberian tiger and red-crowned crane.
| Changbai Mountain became part of the United Nations’ World Biosphere Reserve program in 1980. |
