This is the Chinese Characters Volume matching the threshold-level textbook of New Practical Chinese Reader. It is designed to help adult beginners with their writing of Chinese characters.
This book consists of altogether 14 lessons, each divided into two parts, namely Learning Chinese Characters and Writing Chinese Characters. Each lesson teaches some basic knowledge about Chinese characters and provides detailed analysis and interpretation for the characters concerned. The exercises are presented in various forms, such as recognizing characters, writing characters and guessing puzzles. At the end of the book, there is an index to all the Chinese characters taught in the book as well as some common radicals so as to help the beginners lay a solid foundation for learning Chinese characters.
Liu Xun is a professor at Beijing Language and Culture University, chief editor of Chinese textbooks in Beijing Language and Cultural University Press and member of the National HSK Advisory Committee. Mr. Liu has successively served as a member of the Hanban Expert Advisory Committee for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, leader of the TCFL group in Beijing Assessment Committee of Teaching Positions in Higher Education, board member of World Chinese Teaching Association and consultant of Chinese teaching for the New York State Department of Education. His research focuses on Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Second Language Acquisition, teaching material development and teachers' training, etc. He has published monographs such as Introduction to Chinese as a Foreign Language Pedagogy, Introduction to Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, Brief Introduction to Teaching Chinese as a Second Language, An Overall View of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and a number of academic papers, and has compiled and co-compiled TCFL textbooks such as Practical Chinese Reader (1-4), Chinese Textbook for Children and One Hundred Lessons on Communicative Chinese, etc. He once assumed the main responsibility in the design of the first set of HSK and got the special government allowance awarded by the State Council.
