“Series of Teaching Foreigners
Chinese Grammar” is the achievement of “Research and Development of Grammar
Syllabus for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language and Teaching Reference
Grammar Series (Multi-volume)”, a major project of National Social Science Fund
of China sponsored by Professor Qi Huyang, which has been selected as the “2022
Founding Project of National Publication Foundation”. As an important reference
book for international Chinese language education, it aims to build and improve
the “Grammar System of Chinese Teaching” for foreign students to meet the
development needs of the new era. It mainly serves the first-line Chinese
teachers, researchers, graduate students and undergraduates majoring in
Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages. This series consists of 39
volumes, including 4 outline series, 8 summary series, 26 book series, and 1
collection of essays.
This book is a sub-volume of this
book series.
Directional complement is
difficult to teach and learn in Chinese grammar. The reason is that the number
of directional complement is large, together with strong individuality, and it
is difficult to understand and master the meanings analogically. At the same
time, the existence of a large number of similar structures creates difficulties
in the choice of language output for the learners. The 60 problems listed in
this book can be divided into four sections: theory, knowledge, acquisition and
teaching, more precisely into eight parts: basic concepts and language
comparison, components and word order, structure meaning, expression of
meaning, semantic analysis of similar structures, functional analysis of
similar structures, common errors and teaching problems and design. These problems
bring together the teaching problems encountered by authors in their many years
of front-line teaching practice, as well as the typical errors and typical
problems in important reference books. By reading this book, readers can not
only deepen their comprehensive understanding of directional complement, but
also get practical teaching guidance.
Guo Xiaolin has a PhD in Linguistics and Applied
Linguistics from Beijing Language and Culture University (BLCU), and is a
professor and doctoral supervisor at BLCU. Her research mainly focuses on the
study of modern Chinese grammar and grammar teaching. Professor Guo has
published many papers in professional journals such as Chinese Teaching in
the World and three academic monographs, and edited or co-edited many
textbooks.
Directional complement is widely recognized as
difficult in Chinese language teaching, which is difficult for teachers to
teach and for students to master. Firstly, many restrictions on the use of
directional complement lead to the weak analogicality. Secondly, directional
structures are various in form and huge in number. Existing ontological and
pedagogical studies are scattered in some papers and monographs, lacking
systematicity. Meanwhile, there are many research perspectives and various
interpretations, which, on the contrary, produce a counterproductive effect on
the teaching of the directional complement. This book systematically organizes directional
complements from four aspects: theory, knowledge, acquisition, and teaching,
and the 60 listed problems come from and can be used for reference in teaching
practice. In order to cater to all target readers’ competence, this book is
inclined to lead in from basic knowledge points, such as the concept,
composition, types, and meanings of directional complements, enabling
non-specialized Chinese teachers to have a comprehensive understanding of directional
complements.
This book is recommended for teachers engaged in international Chinese language teaching, whether they are specialized teachers with a background in linguistics or international Chinese language education, or non-specialized teachers with varying academic backgrounds.
