Helen H. Shen is a professor and doctoral supervisor at the department of Asian and Slavic Languages and Literature, the University of Iowa, USA, and the director of Graduate Studies for the department. Her research mainly focuses on word acquisition and reading teaching of Chinese as a second language. Professor Shen has published more than 30 empirical research papers, and has published monographs and textbooks, including Teaching Chinese as a Second Language: Character and Word Acquisition and Instruction, Introduction to Standard Chinese Pinyin System, Learning 100 Chinese Radicals, and The Routledge Intermediate Chinese Reader.
