Chinese as a Second Language: Character and Word Teaching Methods is
a companion volume to the Teaching Chinese as a Second Language: Character
and WordAcquisition and Instruction (2nd Edition). It introduces a
total of 45 teaching methods for beginning, intermediate, and advanced Chinese
learners of North America in the digital era. For each level, there are 15
methods classified into three categories: methods used for introducing new
characters and words, for practice and consolidation, and for review and
application. The presentation of each method contains six components: method
definition, teaching content, method design, teaching steps, instructor’s
reflections, recommendations of online resources and internet tools, with
detailed teaching examples. Each method is guided by the cognitive theory, second
language acquisition theory, etc. Information such as internet resources can be

Helen H. Shen is a professor and doctoral supervisor
at the department of Asian and Slavic Languages and Literature, the University
of Iowa, USA, and the director of Graduate Studies for the department. Her
research mainly focuses on word acquisition and reading teaching of Chinese as
a second language. Professor Shen has published more than 30 empirical research
papers, and has published monographs and textbooks, including Teaching Chinese as a Second Language:Character
and Word Acquisition and Instruction, Introduction to Standard Chinese
